Diversity and Inclusivity

“Disability need not be an obstacle to success" Professor Stephen Hawking

The challenge that typical classroom-style learning presents simply may not work for those with diverse learning styles, and particularly for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, including neurodiversity (SEND).

Many children prefer to learn and integrate information experientially, and many find it hard to sit still and need regular movement or rest breaks. We need to ensure that learning is inclusive and caters for all children and their varying needs and learning styles.

A school hall has been set up ready to run a Get with the Program coding activity. Brighly coloured spots have been placed on the floor in grid formations ready for children to program each other as robots following a set of instructions that they write as an algorithm. At the end of the hall are two banners one with 'Professor' Trice on holding a purple flag and the other with AL the Robot on. There are a row of chairs lined up on the right of the hall and blue doors at the end of the hall. At the bottom of the image is the URL: www.getwiththeprogram.org.uk

Our unique take on learning coding is fun and kinaesthetic, and our unplugged activities involve plenty of movement and creative play. This opens the doors for children with different learning styles, and the activities can be easily adapted for children with different needs.

The impact that our approach to learning is proven. Children with SEND feel just as included and encouraged as their peers, and are not disadvantaged due to their different learning styles or needs – in fact quite the opposite! Children learn to work in a team with others of all abilities, learning styles and skills, and they directly experience the importance of diversity and inclusivity.

And, what's more, we include positive messaging in all our coding adventures to inclusively inspire children that no matter their learning needs, they can aspire to achieve successful and fulfilling roles in STEM. It's at the core foundation of Get with the Program and we're proud it's one of our 8 Pillars.
